Special Schools are now using the ‘Evidence for Learning’ app to enable staff to quickly and easily record student achievements

Le Murier in Guernsey, is just one of many special schools across the world that have chosen to use the ‘Evidence for Learning’ iPad app to improve the way they record student achievements.

‘Evidence for Learning’ is a very efficient product which saves considerable amounts of time, making an immediate and already significant return on our investment...

Outdoor Learning – 100 things to do before I leave school

Le Murier takes a practical approach to teaching, allowing their students to see the relevance and application of the learning activities to real life. It runs an outdoor education scheme called ‘100 things to do before I leave Middle School’, where the 100 things are practical activities such as following trails, sailing, and building shelters.

Never enough hours in the day

The main challenge faced by Le Murier staff when recording evidence of the completion of these activities is time.

‘There are never enough hours in the day and recording evidence was difficult to maintain and keep up to date. Copying evidence into the school system also took a long time, and the students found adding notes very difficult’. Gary Dovey (responsible for Outdoor, Off-site and Residential Learning)

Time limitations combined with the fact that all 100 practical activities are outdoors requires their teaching staff to have a quick and easy means of evidencing student achievements.

Free Trial

Although Jeremy was recommended to use ‘Evidence for Learning’ (provided by www.theteachercloud.net) by Guernsey Local Education Officers, the main reason he chose to download the app was due to the ability to first have access to a free trial, allowing his staff to have an opportunity to use the app and see for themselves how it would work with their students.

‘The free evaluation period was enormously helpful because it gave us time to really explore the App. The level and quality of support we received throughout the trial period ensured that we committed to buying the product’. Jeremy Teehan – Head Teacher, Le Murier School

What makes the ‘Evidence for Learning’ app so great to use?

The ‘Evidence for Learning’ app is great as it allows Le Murier staff to easily capture observations of achievements, quickly tag them to individual or groups of children, and then map these to their own bespoke framework.

According to Jeremy, Head Teacher ‘It is already being used on a daily basis with Outdoor Education and we are now looking to share this more widely with other staff to enable them to explore and extend its many purposes’.

Supports ANY Assessment framework
The ‘Evidence for Learning’ app will support any assessment framework. It has a Framework Library that contains an 'open' collection of education, curriculum, and assessment frameworks from all around the world. You can choose to use the pre-loaded assessment framework or follow a similar approach to Le Murier by importing your own custom frameworks to meet your exact needs.

Easily Produces Reports
The ‘Evidence for Learning’ app also allows you to easily produce personalised reports on demand that can be sent either to a printer, email, a cloud-services provider such as GoogleDrive, Dropbox or SkyDrive, or directly to other Apps installed your iPad. Many other schools use this feature to not only help with the creation of student learning journals, but also to provide evidence to support the conversations at parents’ evenings, observation evidence for assessment moderation purposes, and even provide the invaluable information that can be sent to those new schools for when a child leaves.

Helps with planning
The ‘Evidence for Learning’ app will even allow you to quickly check a student’s progress and identify which areas of your assessment framework are still to be achieved, allowing you to plan useful, relevant activities right there and then.
